ASCR2 - Sprinkler Commercial Residential On-Site Competent Person

Review important information on the "Test Info" page common to all exams and about marking / tagging your study material.

 

This assessment is generally intended for installers of commercial and residential sprinkler systems.  It is also required by many jurisdictions for those performing inspection, testing, and maintenance functions.  This is the most common sprinkler qualification recognized by jurisdictions.

This exam goes into detailed code criteria dealing with sprinkler spacing, obstructions, hangers, seismic fittings, clearance of piping, ceiling pockets, small room rule, types of systems, air maintenance, drainage, and more.  Questions also include basic calculations regarding friction loss through pipe, pressure impact of elevation, and similar concepts that professional installers need to be aware of.  Questions also relate to OSHA Lock-Out-Tag-Out for controlling energy sources such as pumps, and confined space criteria.  This exam covers a lot of material.  It is essential that the candidate be very knowledgeable and familiar with the standards and documents to make good use of their test time.

ASCR4 - Sprinkler Business Certificate Holder

Review important information on the "Test Info" page common to all exams and about marking / tagging your study material.

 

This assessment is generally intended for business owners or partners of commercial and residential sprinkler companies.  It is a longer and slightly more difficult version of the ASCR2 exam.  This exam also includes questions related to NFPA 20 fire pumps, and information from the International Fire / Building Codes to address specific requirements of these codes often overlooked by sprinkler installers.  This exam is intended for those that oversee and are responsible for installers such as administrators, but not designers.

This exam goes into detailed code criteria dealing with sprinkler spacing, obstructions, hangers, seismic fittings, clearance of piping, ceiling pockets, small room rule, types of systems, air maintenance, drainage, and more.  Questions also include basic calculations regarding friction loss through pipe, pressure impact of elevation, and similar concepts that professional installers need to be aware of.  Questions also relate to OSHA Lock-Out-Tag-Out for controlling energy sources such as pumps, and confined space criteria.  This exam covers a lot of material.  It is essential that the candidate be very knowledgeable and familiar with the standards and documents to make good use of their test time.

ASC2 - Sprinkler Commercial On-Site Competent Person

This assessment is generally intended for installers of commercial NFPA 13 sprinkler systems.  This exam is generally recognized by jurisdictions that have a strong residential market where they have installation crews geared for commercial and crews geared towards residential systems, and seldom overlap.  This exam includes NFPA 13R due to the overlap with apartments, hotels, and motels.

This exam goes into detailed code criteria dealing with sprinkler spacing, obstructions, hangers, seismic fittings, clearance of piping, ceiling pockets, small room rule, types of systems, air maintenance, drainage, and more.  Questions also include basic calculations regarding friction loss through pipe, pressure impact of elevation, and similar concepts that professional installers need to be aware of.  Questions also relate to OSHA Lock-Out-Tag-Out for controlling energy sources such as pumps, and confined space criteria.  This exam covers a lot of material.  It is essential that the candidate be very knowledgeable and familiar with the standards and documents to make good use of their test time.

This assessment is generally intended for installers of residential sprinkler systems including both 13D and 13R systems.  This assessment is generally recognized by jurisdictions with a strong residential sprinkler influence.  The 13D and 13R are frequently overlapped between large single family developments with square footage and fire department access challenges, along with apartments, hotels, and motels.

This exam goes into detailed code criteria dealing with sprinkler spacing, obstructions, hangers, some seismic, clearance of piping.  Questions also include basic calculations regarding friction loss through pipe, pressure impact of elevation, and similar concepts that professional installers need to be aware of.  This exam covers a lot of material.  It is essential that the candidate be very knowledgeable and familiar with the standards and documents to make good use of their test time.

FPU2- Fire Pump Installation & Service
 

Review important information on the "Test Info" page common to all exams and about marking / tagging your study material.

 

This assessment is intended for those who install or service fire pumps.  This can include experienced sprinkler installers and manufacturer representatives.  The majority of questions come from NFPA 20.  Some additional questions come from NFPA 70 (NEC), references to NFPA 13 from NFPA 20, NFPA 72 for monitoring, and NFPA 25 for Inspection Testing and Maintenance.   General hydraulic theory questions involving pressures, flows, friction loss, and elevation are included.

ASD2 - Sprinkler Domestic On-Site Person

This assessment is intended for installers of domestic one and two family residential sprinkler systems covered under NFPA 13D.  This assessment is generally recognized by jurisdictions with a strong residential sprinkler influence.  This test can be taken by sprinkler contractors or plumbing contractors to demonstrate competency in NFPA criteria.

This exam goes into detailed code criteria dealing with sprinkler spacing, obstructions, hangers,  clearance of piping.  Questions also include basic calculations regarding friction loss through pipe, pressure impact of elevation, and similar concepts that professional installers need to be aware of.  Material also includes understanding of sprinkler data sheets and limitations of a sprinkler in addition to extensive CPVC listing requirements.

  • Recommended study / book for learning calculations is "Fire Protection Hydraulics and Water Supply Analysis" by Pat Brock, latest edition. Available New.  Used copies are also available online.  First edition through third edition are all great resources. (Do not confuse with "Fire Service Hydraulics and Water Supply - not same book)

NFPA documents can be purchased from the National Fire Protection Association at www.NFPA.org.  You can purchase hard copies and have them mailed to you.  We recommend using NFPA handbooks when available as they contain the full standard along with additional useful images, commentary, and explanations.  Before ordering, make sure you know what edition (Year) that you need.  International Building and Fire Code Handbooks do not contain code content and are not recommended for CSA exams.
